Allergens

Allergic reactions on the rise

Up to a third of all people are susceptible to allergic respiratory disease. Asthma is now our nation's most common illness. Even mild allergies cause misery which cannot be counted in dollars. Severe allergies restrict people's lives. The social costs are felt in many ways.

Allergens at home

Airborne allergens can enter our homes from outdoors. They can also be generated within the home school, or office. Sources include:

  • particles from house dust mites
  • moulds
  • insects
  • pets (especially cats)
  • nitrogen oxides from gas heaters and cookers solvents use in carpets, furniture, paints and cleaning materials

  • dust particles generated within buildings

House dust mites are present in 94% of homes in Australia.  They thrive in warm, humid environments.

Allergens can be reduced

Studies have shown significant health improvements may occur by reducing exposure to indoor allergens and improving ventilation in the home.
